Khan Tengri

Dear Leszek,

You might hear a news about Osh. Situation there has worsened on June 11 night... After consultations with various our authorities we think that during next several days it should be calmed down. We would like to share the information we have.

On June 11 night in Osh (Kyrgyzstan) some turmoils occurred. To the moment Kyrgyz-Uzbek border post Dostuck and airport in Osh work on limited schedule - some people can pass the border and a fewer flights than in regular schedule are operated.

According to official information from Kyrgyz authorities in Bishkek and in Osh it was started as conflict between some local households but at the end a few hundreds of people were involved, and to the moment 40 local persons were killed and more than 4 hundreds were injured. Many shops, internet clubs, theater and a bank were destroyed at night time. In Osh roads are blocked by police and military forces.

Interim Administration announced a curfew in Osh between 18:00 and 6:00 from now until June 20. There are many police/military forces in the city who take all necessary measures to stabilize the situation and provide security in the city.

We would like to note that turmoils are happen in circumstances of distrust to legitimacy of local authority. On June 27 there will be Referendum which should help to make Kyrgyz authorities legitimate. And we hope after the Referendum general situation would help local people to refrain from redundant aggression.

Several mass riots have been taking place previously since early April, and after a few days the situation became calmer. We are far from being excessively optimistic on what is going on, and at the same time it should be noted that never the aggression was aimed to foreigners or tourists. We think during next few days it will be more clear if security situation is safe for tourists or not. To the moment it is hard to say.

We extremely regret for such circumstances and hope that extraordinary measures taken of Interim Administration to provide security in Osh will succeed.

We will keep you informed on changes in situation.

Best regards,
Asel
